Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll

Director: Mat Whitecross
Year Released: 2010
Rating: 1.0

Tacky biopic about the late punk rocker Ian Dury (a foaming-at-the-mouth Andy Serkis) and his rise to fame despite early childhood traumas (he had polio as a lad). Aside from being hyper-stylized rubbish - many of the flights of fancy are visually ugly - it's also a predictable story about a high-wire man whose errant behavior is "excused" because of his deformity: he's a terrible father and husband and self-destructive, but hey, that's what happens when you have musical talent! Whitecross would rather whip the camera around in a dervish than pay mind to the human elements: the movie develops a hernia when it tries to focus on Dury's strained relationship with his emotional son (Bill Milner).
