The Human Centipede (First Sequence)

Director: Tom Six
Year Released: 2009
Rating: 2.0

Looney-tunes German surgeon Dr. Heiter (Dieter Laser, who bears a strong resemblance to Udo Kier) has a crazy plan: to form a chain of human beings surgically sewn together ass-to-mouth (he already tried it with three dogs and they died). Eventually, the human-chain tries to escape but can't (due to obvious mobile limitations) and the police show up but are stymied by the doctor. It's a gimmick and it's a gruesome one - not scary, exactly, but so disturbing in its high-school-kid level of seriousness that it might make you chuckle like I did (I laughed more at this than Date Night with Tina Fey). Unlike the work of David Cronenberg or Shinya Tsukamoto, however, all philosophical/political points are incidental: is it a critique of Europe's sense of superiority over the East and the United States? Is it expressing a concern over the 'progress' made by human science? Is it a crude metaphor for capitalism and the three classes? Or is it an excuse to film a square-jawed and sinewy lunatic scream "Feed Her!" while a cramped Japanese man defecates in a young woman's mouth? Stay tuned! There's a part 2!
