Nacho Libre

Director: Jared Hess
Year Released: 2006
Rating: 2.0

Absurd and low-brow - but sporadically charming - comedy about a priest (Jack Black) who moonlights as a Mexican Wrestler to earn money for the poor children of his village. Its main strength is its good-natured charm and refusal to take absolutely any scene seriously, but its oddball humor does flag in parts, and it doesn't have the same kind of universal appeal of, say, Hess' first feature length film, Napoleon Dynamite, which did follow the same basic formula (loser makes good) but managed to say something deeper about being awkward in high school (or life in general), while this is content just to stay goofy.
