The Missouri Breaks

Director: Arthur Penn
Year Released: 1976
Rating: 2.0

Curious Western about a group of horse thieves (led by Jack Nicholson), the rich land owner they piss off and the bounty hunter that gets hired to take them out (Marlon Brando). Although much maligned by some critics, it's not that bad - although not nearly as good as Heaven's Gate (that other famously loathed experimental Western) or The Last Movie - thanks largely to the performances by Nicholson and Brando: the former downplays his simple criminal character, the latter sports women's hats and makes up most of his own dialogue. Other than those two, it's standard issue anti-Western stuff: lots of dirty clothes, grizzled faces, violent deaths.
